Corey Haynes
GRADUATE ACCOUNTANT | Canny Accounting
SUPERPOWER // Finding + fixing the issues no one else can solve
Corey grew up in Victoria where he attended North Geelong Secondary College as well as Newcomb Secondary College, the latter is where he completed his Year 12 VCE in 2021 and was the first in his family to do so. Corey got his first taste of accounting in Year 11 where he was one of the top students in his class, competing with only one other student for the top marks.
After completing his VCE Exams, Corey would go on to study at Deakin University in Geelong, completing seven of his eight classes in his Diploma of Commerce where he decided to pause and complete his Certificate 4 in Accounting first, before returning to complete the final class and obtaining his Diploma of Commerce and Certificate 4 in Accounting by 2016.
The following year Corey found himself as the Treasurer of the Belmont Community Kindergarten where he would put his accounting skills and knowledge he had gained to use, being solely responsible for the financials of the kindergarten, even assisting and working with the hired accountants in completing their end of financial year details. 2018 presented itself and Corey decided it was time to continue his studies, starting on his second year of Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin University, where he would major in Accounting and Management.
Fast forward to ten months after returning to study, Corey started working in Laverton as an asset identified administrator for a company working on the Melbourne Road upgrades on a temporary basis – it was this role that really kickstarted his career. Shortly after, Corey returned to working closer to home – starting at the ever popular, Popcultcha in North Geelong, as a billing clerk, issuing out invoices to retail customers that made online purchases.
Two years later, Corey would then take the invoicing experience he had gained from Popcultcha and transfer it into his new role within the finance team within Smarthouse Australia where he was a billing clerk and accounts payable officer. It is because of his time in this role that Corey credits his knowledge and expertise within the MYOB and Xero fields.
In November 2022, Corey was offered to interview, with his now team, Canny Group – that same day, his grandmother, suffering from late stages of kidney cancer, became unresponsive. The following day, as he was on his way to the hospital, Corey received a call that informed him that he got the job and was officially Canny Group’s newest Bookkeeper. A deeply proud moment was when Corey was able to tell his grandmother, as it was not too much longer after sharing the news with her that she left the world, earth side and grew her wings.
A great team member who works hard and quickly! He is rarely daunted when he encounters jobs that are complex and requires a keen eye to make sure that the bookkeeping is correct and accurate is exactly how Corey’s team would describe him.
Outside of the office, Corey is kept busy with his stepdaughter! He plays dungeons and dragons style tabletop games and board games on a regular basis with his friends, who he describes to be family. Corey is a badminton player, holding four trophies from his teenage days.
