With a love for all things creative, being passionate about photography and design is Meg Read’s happy place.  After completing a Bachelor of Design at Swinburne University and really honing in on her craft for photography you can see the passion shine through in the photographs that Meg delivers from being behind the lens.  A relaxed and non-intrusive photography style is what sets Meg’s photographs apart from the rest and ensures that her clients feel relaxed in her company, bringing out the best in both her passion and the end result.

Meg is based in Barwon Heads, Victoria – a place that she loves and is the perfect backdrop for her photography.  The love she has for working with natural light is where her skills really shine – rain, hail or sunshine she is always able to find an opportunity to create magical moments.

Meg’s passion for her art has led to her work being featured in Vogue, GT Bride, Polka Dot Bride and Ivory Tribe to name a few!

In your own words… What is Meg Read Photography?

Meg Read Photography is a photography service based in Geelong, Victoria and beyond.  Our unique style captures your most special moments with timeless results.  We offer services for weddings, family photos, and commercial shoots.

Tell us the story – your story, of how you came to be trusted capturing couples exchanging their vows on their wedding day, to being entrusted with bringing businesses into the spotlight and how it has evolved from the beginning to where you are now?

After my Bachelor of Design at Swinburne University, I was inspired to take photography further.  Taking jobs for family and friends transformed into something more meaningful.  To hone my skills, I had shot with experts in the field and gained experience.

My business now offers a wide range of services from weddings days to newborns to business shoots – every week is always different and I love it.

What was your “lightbulb moment”?  The moment you realised that photography was going to be your footprint on the world?

My lightbulb moment was probably when I started to collaborate with my dream clients to help grow their businesses by refreshing their photography content for social media and web pages.  I noticed the significant impact it had on growing their businesses in a very positive way.

Additionally, photographing the most important day of people’s lives is such an honour – observing their joy and capturing all the heartfelt emotions and stunning details that have been meticulously planned for a whole year is so rewarding.

Everybody has something they love about their job, what do you love about yours and what keeps you coming back each day to get back behind the lens to capture photographs?

Every day is so unique.  Working with businesses and families during the week and photographing weddings on the weekend is so enjoyable and rewarding.

There’s a lot of competition in your industry, what sets you apart from the next photographer?

Developing a relationship with each client is essential in order to accurately understand their individual needs.  My friendly demeanour and dedication to quality work ensure that they know I value their project.  I always strive to provide excellent photography services.

What are your top three tips to offer couples or businesses when they are looking to book a photographer for their wedding, family session or commercial shoots?

For recently engaged couples, my top three tips would be:

  1. Don’t lock in a wedding date until you have reached out to your favourite vendors and made sure they are all available on the same date to avoid disappointment.  12-15 months before your wedding is usually an ideal time to do this.
  2. Schedule 15-20 minutes into your wedding day timeline for some alone time together as newlyweds, while taking advantage of the softer lighting at sunset for some beautiful photos.
  3. Even if the forecast looks promising, always have a wet weather backup plan ready that you are happy with.  Victorian weather can be so unpredictable, and it’s better to be prepared than to be disappointed.

What do you consider a good day at work for you?

A good day would be a balance between shooting photos out on location, and then editing and refining them at home.  The best part of my job is that every day brings something new and exciting.

If we were to spend a day in your shoes – what would that look like?

I love to start my day with pilates then I will be off shooting, whether that is on location, or shooting products in my studio.  Then I’ll be home uploading the photos ready to edit!

Every business needs an adviser, who do you turn to at Canny Group and with so many accountants Geelong has on offer, why Canny Group?

From day one, I was impressed with their branding and that just shows how important good branding can be for any company as that drew me in to enquire about their services.

Mandy was essential in guiding me on my small business journey.  Whenever I had a query, she was always quick to reply via email with helpful advice.  Julie who takes care of all the bookkeeping has been a great help for any questions or needs I might have!

Looking into your “Meg Read Photography crystal ball” what do you see the future looking like?

I’d like to continue capturing weddings locally but also interstate, and expand my commercial business by working with clients regularly to help them develop their presence online through photography.

How do I get in touch and find out more about your services… and when you’re available to be booked for shoots?

The easiest way to get in touch is via my contact form on my website, here.  From here, I can send you more information on my photography packages.

Alternatively, you can email me at megreadphotography@gmail.com or give me a call on 0458 330 609 and I will be more than happy to discuss my services with you.
